Competitors made a welcome return to the very popular 4.3km Zandvoort
GP circuit in the Netherlands, for final two rounds of the 2007
"Equipe"GTS
race calendar.
Tom Smith’s luck held out all weekend, having posted
the fastest lap in qualifying, he went on to win the “edge of your
seat” race one by less than one tenth of a second from the fastest
lap setting and two times race leader James Cottingham. The MGBs
domination continues but who knows for how long, as both Malcolm Johnson’s
and Mark Ashworth’s TVR Granturas suffered various mechanical
gremlins.
Race two started in the finishing order of race one, with
the MGBs of Cottingham and Smith on the front of the grid TVRs but
at the end of lap one it was Smith as the clear leader with
Johnson’s TVR and Cottingham’s MGB loosing time scrapping for
second. However, by mid distance the TVR had passed Cottingham,
struggling with a gearbox problem and was convincingly catching the
Smith MGB and setting fastest lap of the race until a brief rain
shower spoilt what was to be another great finale with Smith again
pulling out a good lead towards the end of another great to watch
event.
Throughout
the packed field most all drivers were involved in their own dices,
but race of the weekend was without doubt the six car battle in mid
field between the Gilbern 1800GT of Mike Bell, the Triumph TR3a of
Brian Arculus and the MGBs of Stephan Propsting, Graham Bates,
George Edney and all ending in favour of Chris O'Neill faithfull old
original 1960's Ex Barwell Engineering MGB - 656 FXF.
So with Smith, Cottingham and Johnson taking the overall honours
in race one, Smith Johnson and Neil Howe in his Triumph TR4 took the
final podium place in race two. Pat Arculus’s progress continues
in her debut year with another class win alongside Keith Hampson in
his Ex Le-mans Sunbeam Alpine.
Again, Equipe"GTS
fielded the largest grid of the weekend with a fine 33 car field.

And
so another season comes to a close with many friends reunited and
many new friends made along the way during yet another hugely
successful season of
"Equipe"GTS
Exactly
100 competitors took part during the 14 race 2007 programme, the
racing was close, competitive, but always fair and gentlemanly. At
most meetings the "Equipe"GTS
entry
fielded the largest grid at the meeting and in most every case the
most prestigious and best presented group of genuine historic
specification race cars from the Golden era of motor sport.

Let’s all look
forward to more of the same and hopefully another return to
the fabulous Zandvoort GP circuit in 2008.
