"Signtec" Trophy MGCC Silverstone International
12th July - - This year's MGCCs annual extravaganza at Silverstone was the grandest ever with the Austin Healey Club in attendance celebrating their own national club day and Coys Auction House adding to the "MG Live" weekend. - "Equipe"GTS racers enjoyed their own select grid in the annual "Signtec Trophy" 30 minute race, all contesting for the prestigious Signtec Trophy awarded not to the race winner, but to the most notable class winner or driver of the day. -
- With many MG enthusiasts making their annual pilgrimage to the greatest MG Show on Earth,"Equipe"GTS welcomed five new cars and drivers. Nils-Frederik Nybaeus traveled from Denmark and made his own "Double Header" of the weekend having taken parts in the previous day's Austin Healey 3000 50th birthday celebration race in his Austin Healey 100M, Richard McKoen debuted his smartly turned out 1962 MG Midget and Harvey Woods impressed onlookers with his even more immaculate Ashley bodied MG Midget. Richard Skinner arrived in his recently acquired MGB and Colin Parkinson brought along his superb MGA Coupe - replica of the works team cars which ran at Sebring in 1959. -
- Tom Smith in his MGB simply dominated qualifying with fellow front row starter Jeremey Cottingham's own MGB over 3 seconds in arrears. The race result was a forgone conclusion and as expected Tom Smith led from start to finish and took the flag by a country mile.
Needless to say the greatest interest was among those who followed with many personal dices and tussles especially among those hoping for class honors. The "race of the race" for second third and fourth positions was among those being typical of the "Equipe"GTS series and Jeremey Cottingham held off the fast charging Rob Cull in his TVR who in turn was never much more than a second or so in front of the "Fast Moustache" MGB of David Beresford. Mike Harris and David Gardner both in British Racing Green MGBs completed the top six from John Andon in his class winning Triumph TR4.
Newcomer and still wearing the novice cross on the back of his car, Richard Skinner impressed with very decent 12th place finish promising more to come and Dianne Osborne in another British Racing Green MGB took the ladies prize in 13th position overall. -
- Equally impressive was Harvey Woods, the race and meeting being the Ashley MG Midgets first outing in all competitions. Harvey took the class win from Brian Arculus who in his own WSM bodied MG Midget was driving quite superbly and obviously was not going to concede until the flag, the Ashley eventually taking the class win with a mere 3 seconds advantage with Helen Elstrop's Triumph Spitfire less than second behind the dicing MGs. -
- Again we thank "Signtec" for their continued support long with MGCC for another very special weekend and despite some less than ideal yet typical Engish summer weather, a fine time was had and enjoyed by all. - -- - "Equipe"GTS lap record Neil Howe - TRIUMPH TR4 - 1m 43.1secs - 15th June 2008
